I brought my daughters guitar to Jay to have a new nut and bridge installed, and to improve the action on a entry level Yamaha acoustic. Jay had the guitar ready when he said and the work he did gave an entry level guitar the feel and action of a high dollar Taylor. His prices cannot be touched and having him in the south part of town is a boon to any guitar player in need of repairs large or small. I had my new electric guitar set up at the same time and I didn't know how much of a difference it would make until I got it home and played it. The action was improved, the intonation is perfect, and after some adjustment on the nut there is no buzzing anymore and the top three strings now stay in tune. Thank you Jay!
The answer is yes. Guitar makers do perform basic checks, but you have to remember, your guitar could go through long times in storage, temperature and environmental changes before it arrives to the store.
You have to remember that guitars are made of wood, which is an organic material that can, and most likely will change over time. I've had very expensive and regular guitars exhibit fret problem. Fortunately, 99% of them can be resolved.
